This nationally recognised course teaches you to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults and infants, use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and manage an unconscious casualty until professional help arrives.

Physical Requirements

This course includes physically demanding practical assessments. To successfully complete this course, you must be able to:

  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins placed on the floor, including cycles of chest compressions and rescue breaths (minimum 5 cycles of 30:2)
  • Kneel on the floor and get up and down repeatedly during the practical workshop
  • Place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Perform rescue breathing techniques on manikins

The face-to-face practical component runs for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and involves sustained physical activity.

If you have a current injury, medical condition, disability, or limited mobility that may affect your ability to perform these tasks, please contact us at admin@nexatraining.au before enrolling so we can discuss your individual needs and any reasonable adjustments that may be available.

Assessments

This course includes both online and practical assessments. You must complete and pass all assessments to complete the course and receive your certification.

Online assessment: A knowledge assessment completed through our online learning platform, covering CPR theory through a combination of multiple-choice, true/false, short answer, and video response questions.

Practical assessment: During the face-to-face workshop, you will demonstrate your ability to perform CPR and use an AED in simulated emergency scenarios. This will involve:

  • Demonstrating the full DRSABCD emergency response sequence including recovery position
  • Performing uninterrupted adult CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes (at least 5 cycles of 30:2) on a manikin on the floor
  • Performing uninterrupted infant CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes (at least 5 cycles of 30:2) on a manikin on a firm surface
  • Attaching and following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
  • Demonstrating rotation of single rescuer operators with minimal interruption to compressions
  • Responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
  • Providing a verbal handover report to emergency services
  • Participating in an incident review

All assessments are conducted in a supportive environment with guidance from your assessor. You will have opportunities to practise each skill before being assessed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends that CPR competence be refreshed at least every 12 months to stay current with best practice and guidelines. Because competency changes over time and requires regular updating, Nexa Training views RPL (which might accept older evidence) as not suitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date CPR skills.

Accordingly RPL is NOT offered to candidates of this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should complete this course?

HLTAID009 is suitable for anyone who wants to learn or refresh their CPR skills. It is required for annual CPR renewal and is commonly completed by people renewing an existing first aid certification, workers who need current CPR for their job, and anyone who wants the skills to respond to a cardiac emergency.

Is this the same as a CPR renewal?

Yes. HLTAID009 is the unit of competency for CPR. Whether you are completing it for the first time or renewing your CPR, this is the course you need. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends CPR be renewed every 12 months.

What is the difference between HLTAID009, HLTAID010, and HLTAID011?

HLTAID009 (this course) covers CPR and AED use only. HLTAID010 builds on CPR to add choking, asthma, anaphylaxis, bleeding, and shock. HLTAID011 is the full first aid course covering all of the above plus fractures, envenomation, burns, and more. If your workplace requires a first aid certificate, you likely need HLTAID011.

How long does the course take?

The course includes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes of online pre-course learning and a face-to-face practical workshop of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, for a total of around 3 hours. You must complete the course within 3 months of commencing.

How often do I need to renew my CPR?

The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR competence be refreshed every 12 months. Most employers and regulators require annual CPR renewal. Your full first aid certification (HLTAID011) is valid for 3 years, but the CPR component must be renewed annually.

Do I need to be physically fit?

You need to be able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins on the floor. This involves kneeling and sustained physical effort including chest compressions. If you have any injuries or conditions that may affect this, contact us before enrolling.

What certification will I receive?

On successful completion, you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

What do I need to bring to the practical session?

Bring a valid photo ID, wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear suitable for physical activity (you will be kneeling and working on the floor), and ensure your online pre-course learning is completed before attending.

Where is the practical training held?

Face-to-face practical training is delivered at our training centre in Brisbane, Queensland. Contact us for the current venue address and upcoming session dates.

How much does the course cost?

The course is $90 (GST free), which includes all online learning materials, face-to-face training, assessment, and your Statement of Attainment.

I already have HLTAID011 — do I just need this course for my annual renewal?

Yes. If your HLTAID011 (First Aid) certification is still current (within 3 years), you only need to renew the CPR component annually by completing this HLTAID009 course. When your full first aid expires, you will need to complete HLTAID011 again.
