This course includes physically demanding practical assessments. To successfully complete this course, you must be able to:
- Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins placed on the floor, including cycles of chest compressions and rescue breaths (minimum 5 cycles of 30:2)
- Kneel, bend, and get up and down from the floor repeatedly throughout the training day
- Demonstrate the recovery position using safe manual handling techniques
- Perform rescue breathing techniques on manikins
The face-to-face practical component runs for approximately 4 hours 40 minutes and involves sustained physical activity across multiple assessment tasks.
If you have a current injury, medical condition, disability, or limited mobility that may affect your ability to perform these tasks, please contact us at admin@nexatraining.au before enrolling so we can discuss your individual needs and any reasonable adjustments that may be available.
You will be supplied with relevant and appropriate equipment including:
- Adult and infant resuscitation manikins following ARC guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures
- AED training device (Automated External Defibrillator simulator)
- Adrenaline auto-injector training device (EpiPen trainer)
- Placebo bronchodilator and spacer device
- Wound dressings and bandages (various types)
- Blankets and items to treat for shock
- Workplace first aid kit
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
This course includes both online and practical assessments. You must complete and pass all assessments to complete the course and receive your certification.
Online assessment: A comprehensive knowledge assessment completed through our online learning platform, covering emergency life support theory through a combination of multiple-choice, true/false, short answer, and video response questions.
Practical assessment: During the face-to-face workshop, you will demonstrate your ability to safely and effectively manage simulated emergency scenarios. This will involve:
- Demonstrating the full DRSABCD emergency response sequence including recovery position
- Performing uninterrupted adult and infant CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes each (at least 5 cycles of 30:2)
- Attaching and following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
- Demonstrating rotation of single rescuer operators with minimal interruption to compressions
- Responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
- Managing casualties with choking (adult and infant), asthma, anaphylaxis, bleeding, and shock
- Responding to at least one workplace or community contextualised scenario where you have no prior knowledge of the casualty's condition
- Providing a verbal handover report to emergency services using the IMISTAMBO or ISBAR format
All assessments are conducted in a supportive environment with guidance from your assessor. You will have opportunities to practise each skill before being assessed.
The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends that CPR competence (which is a core skill of this course), be refreshed at least every 12 months to stay current with best practice and guidelines. Because competency changes over time and requires regular updating, Nexa Training views RPL (which might accept older evidence) as not suitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date emergency life support and CPR skills.
Accordingly RPL is NOT offered to candidates of this course.

Who should complete this course?
HLTAID010 is suitable for anyone who may need to provide an emergency response in the workplace or community. It is commonly required for roles in healthcare, policing, protective services, security, fitness, and community services. It is also suitable for anyone who wants to be prepared for life-threatening emergencies.
What is the difference between HLTAID009, HLTAID010, and HLTAID011?
HLTAID009 covers CPR only. HLTAID010 (this course) builds on CPR to include choking, asthma, anaphylaxis, bleeding, and shock — covering all life-threatening emergencies. HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) covers everything in HLTAID010, plus a broader range of injuries and medical conditions such as fractures, envenomation, burns, and spinal injuries. If your workplace requires a full first aid certificate, you likely need HLTAID011.
How long does the course take?
The course includes approximately 4 hours of online pre-course learning and a face-to-face practical workshop of approximately 4 hours 40 minutes, for a total of around 8 hours 40 minutes. You must complete the course within 3 months of commencing.
How long is the certification valid?
Your HLTAID010 Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The CPR component (HLTAID009) must be refreshed every 12 months, as recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council. Some employers or regulators may require more frequent refresher training.
What certification will I receive?
On successful completion, you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID010 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support. This includes HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
Do I need to be physically fit?
You need to be able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins on the floor, and demonstrate the recovery position. This involves sustained kneeling, bending, and physical effort over the training day. If you have any injuries or conditions that may affect this, contact us before enrolling.
Is this the right course for my workplace?
HLTAID010 covers life-threatening emergencies and is sufficient for some roles and industries. However, most Australian workplaces require HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) as the minimum standard under workplace health and safety legislation. Check your employer or regulatory requirements before enrolling. If you work in childcare or education, you need HLTAID012.
Is RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) available?
RPL is not offered for this course. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR competence — a core skill of this course — be refreshed every 12 months. Nexa Training considers RPL unsuitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date emergency life support skills.
What do I need to bring to the practical session?
Bring a valid photo ID, wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear suitable for physical activity (you will be kneeling and working on the floor), and ensure your online pre-course learning is completed before attending.
Where is the practical training held?
Face-to-face practical training is delivered at our training centre in Brisbane, Queensland. Contact us for the current venue address and upcoming session dates.
How much does the course cost?
The course is $110 (GST free), which includes all online learning materials, face-to-face training, assessment, and your Statement of Attainment.
